Album Review: EUSA by Yann Tiersen

French composer and multi-instrumentalist Yann Tiersen, famous for his extraordinary film scores on such modern-day classics as Amélie and Goodbye, Lenin!, has this week released a new ten-track album inspired by Edinburgh University Student Association. Here Flipside takes you through the tracks:

  1. PERN – A fan of the Big Cheese, ‘Cheese is bae, it is the one place where I can be my true self.’, Tiersen has conveyed the emotions he feels throughout a typical Saturday night. ‘The tension begins to build as you stand in the queue waiting on your wristband to get VKs at the bar, ‘what if the rules have changed and they don’t accept my French drivers licence?!’, then there is the long wait to see if you’ll get in before the venue reaches capacity. However, once in I abandon all the doubts I have about my own abilities, my worries about what I’m doing with my life and I ride a wave of euphoria. I also looooove their sunglasses.’
  2. PORZ GORET – Translates as ‘The Rebrand’. ‘The new logo is starting to warm on me, though it took ages for me to spot the S and A in it. I’m not going to start referring to it as The Association though. It will also be EUSA to me. I like some of the new uniforms, the grey seems quite functional but I feel sorry for those poor souls who wear the blue and teal. There will always be a place in my heart for the now-defunct black uniform though. All the staff looked hot as fuck in black!’
  3. LOK GWELTAZ – Outraged by the increase in price of a bottle of VK to £2.80, Tiersen responded in the only way he knew he could, through music. ‘I love VKs, tropical is my favourite, and I’m still in shock at the increase. Why can’t they drop the price to even £2.50? Then I could four for a tenner, but £2.80 just complicates things and I’m left with a load of shrapnel in my wallet on a Sunday morning. I signed the petition but felt there was still more I could do.’
  4. PENN AR ROC’H – The first of two tracks devoted to the food on offer in Library Bar. ‘This is about the burgers. You can’t go wrong with a Library or Balmoral Burger, but I’m still miffed they got rid of the Halloumi Burger after the Fringe.’
  5. KEREON – A late addition to the album, Tiersen was moved to compose this piece upon the revulsion he felt by the actions of the new Sabb team, after they were photographed callously placing their feet on a chair. Tiersen says of this event, ‘The recording of this track was a particularly emotional experience. I saw the photo, and like many others was outraged at their actions. I couldn’t understand the reasoning behind it, especially after looking at the deadness in Patrick Garrett’s eyes, something told me this wasn’t the first chair he’d placed his feet on and it meant nothing to him. I felt the others were in some way trying to curry favour with this obvious psychopath, although I detect through their actions they gained some sort of perverse pleasure, the smiles on the face of Kelly, Husbands and Edgecliffe-Johnsons spoke a thousand words.
  6. YUZIN – A track about the lacking power in the flush of the Teviot toilets. ‘The number of floaters you see is unbelievable. Unless people just aren’t wiping or flushing but that would just be disgusting.’
  7. ROC’H AR VUGALE – Tiersen is a regular attendant at the Sunday night quiz at Teviot. ‘I find a couple hair of the dog pints after the previous night’s Cheese and some nachos is the perfect way to round off the weekend. Although I got into an argument with the quiz masterover the correct plural term for the octopus once. It is Octopuses!’
  8. PENN AR LANN – ‘This is about the nachos! Chicken nachos, with no jalapenos and extra cheese. Yummy for my Tummy!’
  9. ENEZ NEIN – A lament to friends now gone, in particular, former EUSA President Joomba Roisin Tatman. ‘I feel his loss deeply’, says Tiersen,’and I cry myself to sleep every night as I think of him.’
  10. KADORAN – Tiersen says, ‘This one is just about cats. I like cats.’
