Breaking News: The Joker is President of the Speculative Society

Following a two-year long undercover investigation, Flipside can exclusively reveal that the President of Edinburgh’s top-secret Speculative Society is the Joker.

Flipside has learned from the clandestine organisation’s Wikipedia page that the Joker has been its leader since 2008. Until now it had been assumed that the controversial figure was actually dead, after disappearing from Gotham City, America’s “crime capital”, around the time he took up his position with the Society.

Chris Nolan, Secretary of the Speculative Society, said, “The Society’s primary aim since the Joker’s takeover has been to watch Edinburgh burn. The Joker has been key in shaping the Society’s intellectual direction, and has proven his ability to quickly resolve any debates that occur, and implement large scale acts of mayhem.” The Society lists block-booking amongst its most notable achievements of late.

Recently the Society, which for almost 200 years has met in rooms in the University of Edinburgh’s Appleton Tower, has been criticised for not respecting the University’s equal opportunities policy. The Society has refuted this notion asserting that it wants to indiscriminately kill all men, women and children.

Alex Shaw, author of A New History of The Speculative Society, which began serialisation in last week’s edition of The Student, said, “This is like something out of a comic book.”

It is unknown what the Joker plans to do next.

Flipside was unable to reach Batman for comment, although at the Big Cheese last week someone with a gruff voice came up behind us and said, “Lel, he is your problem now.” The mysterious figure then disappeared, attempting to run down the stairs, before falling over head first due to a critical misjudgement of the logic behind the design of Potterrow’s staircase. He was heard muttering, “Drat! A cunning Speculative Society trap.”

Other well known members of the Society include Buzz Aldrin, Pelé and the cast of Hair.
