Urte Macikene revealed as a secret Hydra agent
Fans have expressed their outrage following Marvel Comics’ decision to recast outgoing VPS Urte Macikene as an agent of Hydra, the secret Nazi death cult, in her first post-EUSA action role.
Critics have hit out at Marvel for this move, claiming it merely represents a cheap publicity stunt in the run-up to the EUSA series finale on the 31st of May. Internal sources have also suggested that executives were unhappy with Urte Macikene’s character progression following the success of Neo-Liberal monetary policies in the wider Marvel Universe, and were unsure about her character potential from that point onwards. As a result, they decided to reimagine her backstory in order to generate interest in an origin story film with the possibility of several sequels.
Tumblr fans of Macikene were quick to voice their disapproval. A spokesperson for the UrteGate fightback group ‘donturtemyheart’ said:
“This decision completely ignores Urte’s carefully constructed character arc as a banner wielding warrior of the Left in order to make some cheap headlines and sell some more merchandise. This proves yet again that Hollywood still doesn’t know how to write strong female characters. However, we should point out that we maintain our respect for the democratic mandate of the comic books council in making this artistic choice, and that we elect to ignore it”.
Marvel gave fans reassurances in a press statement claiming that they had no intention to “besmirch a character with such a popular fan following” and that this was merely the “first step in her overall reimagining”. Marvel’s spokesperson was keen to point out that “Regardless of her political affiliations, she will still be fighting against the evils of institutionalised sexism and prejudice”.
Flipside would like to add that regardless of whether she’s a Nazi death cultist or a tree hugging Trot, we still love her.
