Highest Terror Threat No Match for Own Existential Dread
Leading psychologists have suggested that the fear and pain caused by the threat of terrorism in the UK is still very low compared to the that which Britons subject themselves to on a daily basis.
Emerging reports indicate that the new threat level is but a minor concern compared to the cocktail of anxiety, dread and doom collectively harboured inside the minds of the nation, and that further, to accurately measure this internal scale, authorities would ‘need a bigger chart’.
Writers at Edinburgh Flipside this morning confirmed that their personal threat levels had ranged from ‘Perilous Lack of Fulfilment’ to ‘Dying Alone and Unloved’ since January alone, and that the government’s ‘Critical’ ranking was actually something of an improvement by comparison.
‘Imminent attack just loses its impact when you confront the abyss over coffee every morning,’ nodded Kai Renny, 33, idly pushing a mouse around an empty computer screen and intermittently questioning the nature of his reality.
Terrorists may have a long way to go if they hope to intimidate a nation whose biggest threat is enduringly its own pessimism.
