Lecture on North Korea cancelled after threat of cyber-attack
Edinburgh University has taken the unprecedented step of cancelling a lecture following threats of disruption by a group calling itself Guardians of Peace and Quiet (GOPAQ). The planned lecture, on the history of diplomatic engagement with North Korea (1961-present) by Prof. William McBurble, will now have to be removed from the course altogether.
The previous lecture by Prof McBurble had been subjected to cyber attack by the same group. Thirty minutes in, the audience was woken when two students lumbered into the lecture theatre dressed as Cybermen from Doctor Who, shouting things like “Delete” and “You will become like us.” They then delivered a promise that worse disruption would follow if McBurble attempted to deliver his final lecture. Chillingly, they said that it might involve students dressed as Daleks, as well.
“We had no choice but to cancel McBurble’s final lecture,” said a senior staff member. We cannot force staff to lecture with threat of disruption like this hanging over their heads.
In a statement published on line, GOPAQ repeated their threat, but denied any political motive behind it. “It’s just that McBurble is really boring,” they said, “and we all really fancied an afternoon off.”
